Every ruler wants to be measured. This one insists on it. He arrives with no army and no anthem, just a strip of wood laid out beneath him and a demand that somebody read the number out loud.

The heat decides how far he reaches. Buy pressure and he crawls past another inch mark, sweating under his own halo. Let it cool and he shrinks back down the ruler, humbled, waiting to be counted again.
